The ruler of the "Isle of Jazz" is a caricature of popular bandleader Paul Whiteman;
he was widely known in real life by the title "The King of Jazz."
This is one of the greatest accomplishments I
have ever seen on film. Being a musician myself I recognized the efforts in making instruments
sound like speaking voices. Sheer genuis.
A superbly animated, musical cartoon. I especially
enjoy how the musical instruments are used as "weapons of war" to the strains of Wagner's "Ride of
the Valkyries." I also love the "remake" of Romeo and Juliet.
I thought that this was a pretty stupid cartoon. The
humanized instruments were just too much for me and they acted so dumb. No wonder they call it a
"Silly Symphony." I sort of laughed at it, but I guess I thought that it was so stupid that it was
funny. I would, however, not want to have this short as part of my Disney collection.
Even though the classical vs. jazz thing seems naive
and a little juvenile compared to what Disney would do just a few years later in Fantasia, this
is one of the great Silly Symphonies-- it's beautifully art directed and quite imaginative.
Music Land was one of the first cartoons I saw as a kid,
and its genius is still unique today. The muscial little war played out brought life to instruments,
for the first and greatest time. This cartoon is freakin' awesome.
When I was a child I kept on hearing about this
cartoon, and wanted to see it badly. Once I got the Silly Symphonies DVD, I saw it and loved it!
This cartoon is excellent for a number of reasons: the colors, characters (because I just love cartoons
where inanimate objects are given life!) Although, the number one reason why this short is one of my
absolute favorites is the music, 'cause I am a fan of both classical and jazz. The sequences are awesome
too. My favorite is the war, but I also love the wedding on the Bridge of Harmony at the end.
This short gets a score of 100%!
