Comments
- Released as part of the Disney feature "Make Mine Music"
- From Anastajia L. Geiger : Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet is an absolutely wonderful story. I cry every time I see it, and I just wish that I could know who sang the narrative song... I've been trying to find the lyrics to it, but have been unsuccessful. Nonetheless, I wish to commend who ever is responsible for the making of that little skit. They are entitled to some serious praise. Well done.
- From Liz : This has been a favorite of mine since I was very young; I can still see the entire short in my mind when I read the lyrics. Still is one of my favorites.
- From Katie : I love this short! It's one of my absolute favourites! The song is great, and the Andrews Sisters are the perfect voices for it. I always loved the ending, it's so perfect. I think this is one of the most adorable love stories I've ever heard.
- From Maudit : Was feeling kind of blue the other day... when lo and behold Johnnie Fedora was being aired on television! As a child I was always transfixed by the old Disney stories that weren't Mickey or Donald related. This is and always will be one of my favourite stories... true love gained or lost will always find its way back to a person - I guess I've always been a sucker for stories concerning hope and perseverance, where good things will happen to those who love. Needless to say I felt a lot better when the cartoon was over!
- From Erin : This was my ultimate favorite cartoon short-- Each afternoon when I watched Donald Duck Presents, I would hope this one would be on... I loved the song, the characters, the whole thing. When I went on long road trips with my parents and dog, I would act out the cartoon using my dad's cowboy hat and a baseball cap. It's a classic!
- From Teresa : I remember watching this video when I was young and I loved it then and I love it now. I was so excited to see that it was released on a new Disney DVD. I will have to run out and buy it!
- From Danette : I remember this from many years ago. I worked at a local theater and it was a short we showed at kiddie matinees.
I have always wanted to own it and am glad to have found it on DVD. I will share it with as many people as I can, what a wonderful heartfelt story.
- From Kendra : Oh I absolutely adore this cartoon. I grew up watching all the Disney shorts and this one has always stood out in my mind. The story is so simple yet sweet, and being the type of child to always imagine inanimate objects (toys, clothing, etc.) had thoughts and feelings, this one particularly struck home. Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet are hats who are in love and live in the window of a department store. Alice is purchased and Johnny searches to find his lost love. They are reunited in the end on the heads of two carriage horses. The story still brings tears to my eyes, and the musical accompanyment is just wonderful. They just don't make cartoons like this anymore.
- From John Blanchard : I can only say amen to the comments I have read about this cartoon. Fabulous story with a never-ending appeal, and bright sing-a-long music.
- From Marya : I watched this a few years ago on the disney channel on the mickey mouse and friends show... and ever since then I've been waiting to watch it again but I always ended up in disappointment. All those years ive been looking for it, and finally last month I found it on Make Mine Music.. I was sooo happy, I kept watching it over and over. I love listening to the Andrews Sisters, the short was absolutely positively wonderful, and I still haven't found any match to it.
- From Tracy : I loved this one too, but for me it was not just the story, but the music! When I was growning up, I memorized and would sing along with everything I watched... This one was great. "Johnny, oh Johnny! Your Alice Bluebonnet will always be waiting for you! So don't give up hoping, and don't give up dreaming, for true love will come smiling through!" I've probably mixed up the words, but the emotionally pregnant sound of those solos is unforgettable.
- From NormaJean : This has always been my absolute favourite short. I just learned from the other comments that it is in Make Mine Music. I am now going to buy it. I started crying just reading the post with some lyrics in it. It is, by far, the best short Disney has ever released.
- From Leona : Actually I never saw the 'short' but my dad used to sing the original song. When the web came along, he asked me to try to find the sheet music or lyrics but I was unsuccessful before his death.
Since 1997 I have found a Disney CD and a Disney kids' book - but still have not found the original lyrics.
- From Hali : 10 out of 10. One of my all time favorites.
- From Lady Delaidra : It's so cute. I saw it once on Valentine's Day with my boyfriend and I cried. It's cute.
- From Bessie Zaverdinos : We were asked to do a skit at our Sunday School class at our church relating to the 50's. I really didn't want to participate in this. However, when my husband started singing Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet, it touched my heart, so that I wholeheartedly agreed to do so. Apparently, he had seen it in the 50's, and was so touched by it, he memorized it, and after all those years, remembered it word for word. My heart was so touched by the words, that we decided to use this for our skit. We changed the names to Stevie Fedora and Bessie Bluebonnet We went out and bought the DVD and each time we watch it, it touches our hearts, and whoever we sing it to touches their hearts also. It is, indeed, a masterpiece.
- From Dianne Lloyd : I became aware several years ago that if I had a thought, many others would have the same. So when out of my subconcious came the title of a Disney Short that I so fondly remembered from over the years (I am 60) I quickly searched the web "Disney Shorts" and much too my glee, found this website. Again, I found that several people had also echoed my thoughts. I'm on my way to get my copy of the DVD that is now available! Thank you so much!
- From Gina : By far one of the most memorable cartoons by Disney. I remember when the Disney channel used to play these short films all the time. Now you have to go searching on the internet to watch the cartoons again. This website is great. I wish that Disney would devote a channel to all these old cartoons.
- From Grace : This is my favorite Disney cartoon. It's a beautiful love story and it's perfect for Valentine's Day. When I watched it, it really touched my heart and made me feel better. By watching this cartoon it's great for your Valentines and it will enspire your heart, make you sing along with the cute lyrics, and make you cry. I recommend this short.
- From Imaginarylady : I really loved this short. Such a romantic short. I loved it really much. I love the song The Andrew Siters sang. The Andrew Sisters became of one of my favorite singers and I idol them. How sad I felt for Johnnie and Alice to separate from each other. I loved how Johnnie expressed his feelings with his eyes and his mouth at the center of the large hole. I loved the way how Alice holds a rose in her lips and bats her eyelashes at Johnnie. I love this short so much that I wish I could see it more and more.
- From Stephanni : I have been looking for this short since my 1st child was born! That's 12 years! I wish they still aired things of this nature for kids now. Today's cartoons have nothing on the films of "yester-year". Donald Duck Presents had another fave of mine, where these bears were sentenced to clean up of Yosemite National Park, where they would bump their "back-sides" together in this cute little song. (Editor's note : "In the Bag.") I love Disney! Thank you for the memories!
- From Sarah C : The Disney Channel used to show these awesome classic cartoons all the time. They only show Hanna Montana and all the new shows. I love this cartoon with the Andrews Sisters singing this sweet love song that sounds like a lullaby. Always brings tears to my eyes.
- From Jennifer : This is by far one of my favorite cartoon short of all time. I get goosebumps when I remember the heartache and devotion felt in the song and in the characters. Best love story ever. And the Andrew Sisters were the singers on this .
- From Melissa : I watched this when I was a child and it is my all time favorite Disney short.
-
From Matthew Cooper : Since I was in 2nd grade, this short has been one of my all time favourites! I have seen it with the bar-fight scene, but can suprisingly imagine it censored (It probably jumps to the bit with the birds eye-view of Johnny being blown away.) What suprised me about this cartoon was that the only other hats, other than Johnny and Alice that took on human life form were the policeman's hat that Johnny sees and the pink feathered hat in the bar (that hat was sexy-pretty and Alice was cute-pretty.) Also, this short had a few flaws in it like when the Andrew Sisters sing "and it started to rain and pour", and it's a street cleaner. Though, overall this short has a very good musical score, is very colorful and the story is very romantic, but I'll never understand why Alice was on the other horse (another flaw, because she was bought by that girl at first, so why would she later be sold to the iceman.) Well, mabye Alice could have gone through what Johnny did. I give this short a 100% score!
By the way, I used to play Johnny and Alice, pretending that my toy fireman's hat was Johnny and that my little sister's sun hat was Alice.
Lyrics
Johnnie Fedora met Alice Bluebonnet
In the window of an department store
'Twas love at first sight
And they promised one night
They'd be sweethearts forever more.
Johnnie would serenade Alice
Too-ra-lay, too-ra-lie, too-ra-loo
He sang of a beautiful palace
Of a beautiful hatbox for two
But Johnnie Fedora lost Alice Bluebonnet
To a patron of the department store
Her beauty was sought by
The girl she was bough by
For $23.94
Johnnie, oh Johnnie,
Your Alice Bluebonnet
Will always be waiting for you.
So don't give up hoping
And don't give up dreaming
For true love will come smiling through.
Johnnie Fedora was lonely and stranded
In the window of the department store
When lo and behold
He was suddenly sold
And his heart became gay once more.
Johnnie sang out like a robin
Too-ra-lay, too-ra-lie, too-ra-loo
To strangers he'd come up a-bobbin'
Oh! I thought you were someone I knew.
He looked for her uptown and crosstown and downtown
From the Brooklyn Bridge to the Jersey shore
It all seemed in vain 'till he heard the refrain
Of the song Alice sang of yore.
Johnnie, oh Johnnie,
Your Alice Bluebonnet
Will always be waiting for you.
So don't give up hoping
And don't give up dreaming
For true love will come smiling through.
Johnnie kept yearning
He kept on returning
To the window of the department store
His voice became hushed
He was literally crushed
And it started to rain and pour.
Each place he went he kept calling
Too-ra-lay, too-ra-lie, too-ra-loo
His spirits kept falling and falling
For his Alice was nowhere in view.
But hey nonnie-nonnie,
An iceman found Johnnie
And he cut him to fit on his horse's ears.
'Twas done without malice
For beside him was Alice
And they lived on for years and years.
You Johnnie Fedoras
You Alice Bluebonnets
Whenever you find yourself blue
You'll find it's June in December
If you just remember
That true love will come smiling through.
