From Patrick Malone : Another stock situation
as Pluto throws away his collar and becomes Pete's dog for a while, who uses
him as a "diggin' dog." Pete seems to span a variety of characters in Mouse
Works from regular suburban neighbor to out and out criminal. Although it's
true that he did this in the classic shorts as well, it was more of a
metamorphosis from the truly evil personage in the early shorts (such as
"Two Gun Mickey") to the suburban neighbor of "The New Neighbor." In these
shorts, they are trying to have it both ways at once, so we get a more
schizophrenic view of Pete. Consequently, we're never too sure how to take
him.

From J. D. Weil : Mickey disciplines Pluto
for digging in the front yard, so Pluto decides to run away. After eluding
the dog catcher, he's taken in by Pete (in more ways than one) who happens
to like his digging abilities. But Pluto finds out that being with Mickey
is preferable to Pete so he decides to beat it from there as well. The plot
is predictable and so is the short.
-
From Juan F. Lara : I laughed a little bit
at Pete in the scenes where Pluto's digging for him. I liked Jim Cummings's
bombastic portrayal of Pete. Beyond that, nothing in this short interested
me. Pluto was not sympathetic at the beginning and so the scene where he
threw away his collar didn't work for me. The ending was especially maudlin
for this series.
-
From Tom : Isn't this sort of a role reversal
of "Pluto vs. the Watchdog"? It definitely seemed very familiar.
I have seen "Pluto Runs Away" and would like to
submit a comment on this short
